Monday Morning Message

What do you do when the temperature outside is making you crazy?

Yes, that says -46 degrees celcius!

Like Nike said.....Just Do It!

Have a great week!

Friday Findings

I love a good post it note to remind me of what needs to get done. Every once in a while I find a note in the house that I didn't write.  Like this one....
found on my computer screen
 or this one...
found on my calendar

or this one...
found on a package of treats from my neighbor

Sometimes a note from a loved one or a good friend can make your day or even your week.  It takes but a moment to say something nice that can lift the spirits of those you love.  Not all post it notes need to be for lists!

Where will you leave a post it note today?

Fantastic Friday

Every once in a while I have the privilege of speaking to a group of people that really affect me.
Yesterday I was in Lac La Biche, Alberta to speak at the 2011 Parenting Conference.

What a great opportunity to talk to parents of all kinds about how to be an organized family and a successful family.  There were young moms, older moms, families with one parent or two and even some special grandparents who are bringing up their grandkids as well as some foster children.  I was blown away by how much love and support was in the room for families today.

My childhood was not the best and I wonder if there had been the type of resources like we have today if the struggle would have been less. I am grateful for the Military Family Resource Centre that I use, the FCSS that are found in many cities around this province as well as the leaders and social workers that go out into our communities to give hands-on help to us.

Thank you for having me as a speaker and thank you for the work you do.

Stuff to get Organized

I get the question "What do you organize?" a lot.
I never get tired of that question.
The list goes on and on...

Drawers of all shapes and sizes
Sheds and Garages
Living Rooms
Dining Rooms
Nooks and Crannies
Yards and Greenhouses
Basements (but not crawl spaces)
Laundry Rooms
Home Offices
Craft Rooms
Game Rooms
Family Rooms

You see where this is going.

If it needs organizing, I get a kick out of tearing it apart, sorting the contents and putting it all back in a totally fantastically organized manner. (Usually with storage you already own but sometimes I get to buy new too)

I've always liked to put things in their place so that I can find them when I need them.  I get frustrated when other people don't respect my system and I have to "train" them all over.
(Not really, I secretly like to tell people how to organize over and over again.  I'm strange that way.)

I don't like organizing computers.  I worry that I could make an error and lose your important information.

My favorite organizing job is for those people who are so happy to see me at the door.

Those are the best.

I talk a lot when I work. A lot! So the time goes very quickly for me and the client hears other tidbits that they can use when I am gone.  I like to think that my talking is helpful and distracting at the same time.

If I organize one thing a day, even if it's just the laundry, I feel happier.

Is there something that you do that makes you happy to organize?

Friday Findings

This disaster area is my daughters room.  I got permission to talk about it since it is her space and I didn't want her upset.  She is ten years old and has a hard time cleaning up after herself. She finds it "boring".  She still likes 99% of the things in her room and she does know where everything goes but the task of tidying up makes her frustrated and sometimes angry.

What do you do with a child like this?

Through trial and error we found out that she works much better when an adult is in close proximity to her. She is a social person and if I am in my room and she is in her room I can chat back and forth with her to see how it's going.  She would prefer if I would do the work for her but this is not the lesson I'm trying to teach. I can shut the door or tell her to "do it tomorrow" when I'm not in the mood to get on her case but eventually all roads lead back to this messy space.

We sorted through her things and quickly realized that her clothing is causing her stress.  She is growing quickly and does not tell me when things don't fit anymore. I made a note to ask her about her wardrobe more often even if the idea of shopping for my amazon girl does make me cringe.  She also had toys in there that we could re-locate to the playroom that she is ready to share.  After a few more tweaks and a small moving of bins we were back to tidy town.  She lay on her bed and grabbed a book.  I make a point of asking her how she felt in her clean room and she said "this feels great".  So I also made a point of telling her that a five minute tidy up time is much better than a two hour organizing session, and not to give me so much grief when I say let's get working on the bedroom.

The results...

What chores do you have a hard time getting family members to do and how do you overcome the huff and puffs and rolling of the eyes?

List Lady

Hello and Welcome Back!

I had a great holiday.  I sat around and ate whatever my husband put in front of me.  I didn't worry about going to the gym. (Don't tell my trainer)  I tried not to stress about the pine needles all over the floor. (The thing was dead from the day we got it home and it went downhill from there) I also did a lot of organizing with the family.

You would think that my house is already organized...which it is...but even an organized organizer can find stuff to throw out.  Mr. Mike got into the swing of things and purged the kitchen of gadgets and extra small appliances.  We are still working on some small spaces but we have a pile about four boxes, plus some stuff stacked on top, to go to the second hand store. Yay!

What am I up to now?  Well I'm glad you asked.

I love them.
I need them.
They are my friend.

Here are the top lists that I have been making so far this year.
Play along and make  your own lists to add to my list.

1. Menu
2. Chore Chart
3. Annual Goals
4. Groceries
5. Inventories
6. Budget
7 Projects

Some of these lists belong side-by-side.  The inventory of the food in the freezer, cupboards and food storage area is done before the Menu is done, which is done before the Grocery list is done.  See what I mean.

Go ahead and make your lists.  Don't make them too long.  Put them all in one place so you don't have bits of paper with lists all over the place.  No one likes a lost list.

What's on your list today?
